Teaching that connects Economics to real life
I'm Alex, founder of The Big Macro. I am a qualified UK teacher and Head of Economics, Business Studies and Careers at an independent school. I have taught for 10 years, supporting students in Economics, Business Studies and Mathematics.
My teaching focuses on understanding and application: asking why economic changes occur, tracing their consequences, interpreting evidence and forming justified conclusions.
Qualifications and academic development
I hold a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and a BA (Hons) in Business with Marketing. I am currently studying towards an MSc in Applied Economics (Banking & Finance) at the University of Bath.
International industry experience
Before teaching, I worked as a Senior Offshore Geophysical Engineer, leading survey operations in locations including Norway, Scotland, Trinidad and Venezuela. That first-hand experience of international projects and business decision-making helps me bring subjects such as investment, energy markets and trade to life.
Education and pastoral leadership
Alongside leading Economics and Business Studies, I have developed courses in Personal Finance and Understanding the Modern World, as well as careers and higher-education programmes. My experience as a boarding-school Housemaster has reinforced the importance of patient mentoring and knowing each student's needs.
What students can expect
Each lesson is delivered by me, using guided questioning, clear diagram explanations, applied examples and examination practice. GCSE pupils develop solid foundations; A-level pupils build multi-stage analysis, evaluation and supported judgements.
